Founding of the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn
The Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn was founded when three Freemasons – William Robert Woodman, William Wynn Westcott, and Samuel Liddell “MacGregor” Mathers – sign a pledge of fidelity on 12 February 1888. The Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn existed as one coherent association from 1888 to 1901. It is now recognized as the occult order that had the greatest influence on twentieth-century magic.
