Pride and Prejudice
Pride and Prejudice was published anonymously on January 28th, 1813. Austen's first published novel Sense and Sensibility was also published anonymously; the only information provided on the title page was that the work was "By a Lady." Piggybacking on the success of that first novel, Pride and Prejudice's title page advertised that this work was "By the Author of 'Sense and Sensibility.'" Austen sold the copyright of the novel to the publisher, Thomas Egerton, and, as a result, did not see the bulk of the profits from this highly successful novel.Â
