This multilingual online encyclopedia was created by Jimmy Wales and Larry Sanger, and it has been maintained as an open collaboration project. This website is the largest and most popular reference work on the World Wide Web. It has been ranked as the most popular website by Alexa in 2019. The website is owned and supported by the Wikimedia Foundation, which is a non-profit organization funded mostly by donors. It comprises of more than 40 million articles in over 300 different languages. In the year 2014, it had up to 18-billion page views and nearly 500 million international views per month in that year. 

In the YouTube series The Autobiography of Jane Eyre, Adele Rochester (Juliet McLaughlin) negates Rochester's comments about fairies not being able to realistically live on the moon by saying, "There's no food, or water, or Wikipedia."(5:38, "Fairytales," Ep:49). This comment made by Adele parallels Bronte's Adele in Jane Eyre, when Jane observed that she disbelieved Rochester's fairy story by stating, "she was sure they would never appear to to him, nor ever give him rings, or offer to live with him on the moon."(p. 240, Norton 4th Critical Edition). This savvy streak that Adele possesses is not limited to Bronte's Victorian Era Adele, but it can also be seen in 2013's The Autobiography of Jane Eyre Adele. The only slight difference between the two Adele's is that the contemporary Adele mentioned an online reference to back up her argument about fairies not being able to live on the moon. The Autobiography of Jane Eyre Adele finds it impossible for fairies or anyone to live on the moon, because it does not have the basic necessities like water, food and in today's society, Wikipedia. This site is an indispensable resource that people of today cannot imagine living without and learning from. The Autobiography of Jane Eyre Adele certainly sees this as a necessity in her life that she cannot imagine going without, just like air or water, and like Adele, many people in today's society see this site as a useful resource as well.
