The masked figure who was disguising himself as death represents the poison that Livesey and his followers believed alcohol was, a silent killer in a sense. In contrast to this, liquids, particularly water, were promoted as ways to live longer, healthier lives and were even endorsed by athletes at the time like W.G. Grace, an english Cricket player.
