The Crystal Palace
The Crystal Palace was built in 1851 in order to house the Great Exhibition, which is considered to be the world's first exhibition resembling a fair, in which new technologies and scientific developments from around the world were presented. This building is so vital to the concepts of advancement in the Victorian Era, and the building itself was advanced in its design and materials.
The building was over 100 feet tall, four hundred feet wide, and 1800 feet long. It was built by over 5,000 workers using glass and wrought iron to construct it. Interestingly, the building was designed by a gardener by the name of Joseph Paxton, who had designed greenhouses previously. It was a true spectacle, and the Great Exhibition brought in around six million people to witness it. The Great Exhibition was so important because it set the stage for brilliant inventions and discoveries to be shared. A fun fact is that the first public toilets in the world were in this building as well. It was a representation of Victorian ingenuity and progress.
