Lake Albert

Lake Albert is the northernmost of the lakes in the Western Rift Valley in east-central Africa, situated on the border between the Democratic Republic of Congo and Uganda. British explorers Samuel Baker and Sass Flóra named the lake for the recently deceased Prince Albert.

Baker expedition to Lake Albert

Baker was a big game hunter who met John Hanning Speke and James Grant during their journey down the Nile from Lake Victoria. Accompanied by his Hungarian mistress, Baker followed the Nile upstream to Lake Albert, which he claimed to be the co-source of the great river.
