Kolkata
Kolkata (formerly Calcutta) is an Indian port city located on the east bank of the river Hooghly. It is the capital of the state of West Bengal in eastern India. In the nineteenth and early twentieth century, it was an important hub of the Bengali Renaissance. The British East India Company arrived in Kolkata in 1690, and the city became the company’s headquarters in 1773. The city was an important location for the Indian Independence Movement.
