Geneva is a large city in Switzerland, the second-most populous after Zurich. It is a financial center and known for its global diplomacy. It hosts the headquarters for the United Nations and the Red Cross. The Geneva Conventions, signed in 1949, were established here that dealt with the treatment of prisoners or war and non-combatants of war. Historically, Geneva was under the rule of the Holy Roman Emperor until the fourteenth century, until the House of Savoy came into control. It was aligned with the Swiss Confederacy in the sixteenth century and France in the eighteenth century. It was adopted into the Swiss Confederation at the end of the Napoleonic Wars in 1814.
