Dorest/Delaford
The location of Delaford, England was mentioned a few times in the novel Sense & Sensibility. This was Colonel Brandon’s home. He eventually begins a relationship with Marianne, and this is where they will reside. Not to mention, Colonel Brandon also offers Edward and Elinor a piece of estate on his land. This means that the sisters will be on the same land and be able to continue their plays off each other’s sense and sensibility. In the real world, Delaford is the location of Dorest also known as Dorsetshire, England. Dorset has a varied landscape featuring broad elevated chalk downs, steep limestone ridges and low-lying clay valleys (Dorset). During the 19th century in Dorest, “poor families could be housed in one of three broad ways. Firstly, they could take over existing accommodation such as empty farmhouses, or cottages. Individuals were more likely to lodge with existing farmers and cottagers. In other cases, it was landlords who subdivided larger village buildings into tenements to let to incoming families” (British Agriculture History Society). This helps to give the reader a better grasp of the novel and understand the limited options Ms. Dashwood and her daughters have. Therefore, the Dashwood’s first move to live with Sir John Middleton and later move when Elinor goes to live on Colonel Brandon’s (another cottager’s) land.
