Meryton is the fictional town where the militia regiment is quartered for a small amount of time in Pride and Prejudice . It is also where the Meryton ball took place, where the readers are able to learn more about Elizabeth as as character. Although Meryton is not a real place, it represents towns very similar to where the militia was stationed. The militia would often spend the winters in towns inland from the shores which is where Meryton would be located. Oftentimes the militia regiment would move out towards the coast during the summer months where the larger camps were located, Brighton being the largest. In the book, it states that Meryton is about 24 miles from London in Hertfordshire, between Longbourn and Netherfield.
