Meryton is the fictional town in Pride and Prejudice where the militia regiment is quartered for a short amount of time. It is also the location where the Meryton Ball takes place, where we get to know Elizabeth Bennet as a character. Meryton is described as being 24 miles from London in Hertfordshire, between Longbourne and Netherfield. Oftentimes the militia regiments were stationed inland, in towns like Meryton during the winter months. During the summer months the soldiers would move to larger camps such as Brighton (the largest) where they would be stationed along the coast.
