Sussex is a historic county in South East England corresponding roughly in area to the ancient Kingdom of Sussex. In the early nineteenth century, many Sussex agricultural laborers became either unemployed or faced pay cuts. In 1830, these poor work conditions triggered riots that became known as the Swing Riots. Percy Bysshe Shelley was born in Sussex, and William Blake, Alfred Tennyson, Rudyard Kipling, W.B. Yeats, H.G. Wells, Arthur Conan Doyle, and Ezra Pound all spent significant time in Sussex. A.A. Milne set his Winnie-the-Pooh stories in Ashdown Forest.
