Yarmouth- Lake Michigan
Lake Michigan- Yarmouth
Although Lake Michigan pales in comparison to the size of the ocean, a young child standing on the beach could never tell the difference. The reason I selected this location is because my family has a lake house on this lake, and reading about Yarmouth in David Copperfield reminded me of the nights I spent eating dinner on the porch, and taking long walks with my cousins in the afternoon on the beach. The house we have their is old and in need of repairs. At night we can you can hear the wind blowing through the screen doors and the gentle rippling of the lake outside. Although the house is a upgrade from a ship that has been turned upside down, sleeping their at night is chilly and rustic. My family has used it for gathering ever since I was little, and like David, I have many fond childhood memories there.
Many people would consider an overcast grey sky as depressing, however, on Lake Michigan, the feelings are quite different. In the morning, the calm water reflects the overcast grey sky, and it is impossible to tell where the water ends and the horizon begins. Standing on the porch in the morning sipping tea, the grey water and sky is overwhelmingly calm and peaceful. You know that if the sun breaks through you will have a wonderful day walking on the windy beach, and if a tempest makes it impossible to go outside, you shall curl up with a Chales Dickens book by candlelight. (Literally by candlelight, their are no overhead lights in the house.)
Reading about David finding a little comfort at Yarmouth during his childhood resonated with me more than anything else we have read this semester. I connected it to the memories I had as a child, walking on the beach, eating dinner with my family, and talking with my cousins. Although we never found the remains of shipwrecks, we would find a countless amount of driftwood, and stones to skip rocks. At night we would dig a small fire pit and start a small bonfire with the wood we would find during the day. Being their would be an escape from life back at home, and a chance to explore when I was very young.
